Vilhelm fon Humboldt 22 iyun1767-ci ildə AlmaniyanınPotsdam şəhərində anadan olmuşdu. O, klassik təhsil almış, müxtəlif mədəniyyətlərə maraq göstərmiş, təkcə Avropa dillərini deyil, həm də bask, Amerika, Çin, habelə malay dillərini dərindən öyrənmiş və özünün dil fəlsəfəsini məhz çoxsaylı dillərin materiallarından bəhrələnərək işləyib hazırlamışdır.Ona G. V. Laybnisin (1646-1716) təsiri böyük olmuşdur. İ. Kantın (1724 -1804) əsərləri onun yetişməsində mühim rol oynamışdı.O, tənqidi realizmdə Y.V. fon Göte (1749-1829) və F. Şillerlə (1759-1805) razılaşırdı. Bu istiqamətin Vilhelm fon Humboldtda dərin iz buraxmasında onun Parisdə keçirdiyi illər (1797-1801) xüsusi qeyd edilməlidir.

Alman filosofu Vilhelm fon Humboldt (1767-1835) XIX əsrin əvvəllərində belə bir tezisi müdafiə edirdi ki, “bir birliyin dili ilə o birlikdə yaşayan fərd(lər)in zehni yönümləri arasında o dərəcədə yaxın bağlar var ki, bunlardan birinə dair məlumat əldə etsəniz o biri ilə bağlı məlumatları da tamamilə əldə etmiş olacaqsınız. Çünki dil və zehni fəaliyyət (intellectuality) birlikdə meydana gəlir və formalaşır. Cəmiyyəti dilində görər, dilində anlarıq. Bir cəmiyyətin dili o cəmiyyətin ruhu, ruhu isə dilidir. Bu dərəcədə eyni olan başqa bir şeyi düşünmək həqiqətən çətindir. Humbolt dil və mədəniyyəti sadəcə qarşılıqlı əlaqə və təsirdə olan iki fenomen kimi deyil, onları köklü bir eyniliyə malik olan iki sosial fenomen kimi təhlil edir. Əslində dil və mədəniyyət arasındakı əlaqəni və təsiri kimsə inkar etmir. Lakin bu əlaqə müdafiə olunmaqla yanaşı, eyni zamanda, mədəniyyətlərin dillər tərəfindən şərtlənib idarə olunduğu tezisi və təsirlənmənin tək istiqamətli olduğu iddiası mübahisələrə gətirib çıxarır.
