Nataniel Hotorn 4 iyul 1804-cü ildə Massaçusets ştatının Seylem şəhərində anadan olmuşdur.1825-ci ildə Boudin kollecini bitirib. Gələcək prezident Franklin Pirs və gələcək şair Henri Lonqfellonun sinif yoldaşı olmuşdur. Ədəbi yaradıcılığa XVIII əsrin 20-ci illərində başlayıb. İlk əsəri "Fenşo" ("Fanshaw") romanı olmuşdur (1828). 1837-ci ildə "İki dəfə hekayə əhvalatı", 1841-ci ildə "Babanın kreslosu" əsərlərini yazmışdır. 1838-ci ildə Sofiya Pibodi ilə ailə həyatı qurmuşdur. Sofiya ilə evləndikdən sonra 1842-ci ildə gömrük idarəsində çalışmış, transsendentalist-utopik cərəyana qoşulmuşdur. Nataniel Hotorn 19 may 1864-cü ildə Nyu-Hempşir ştatının Plement şəhərində vəfat etmişdir.
