By the time of Shah Sulayman (1663-1694) European painting had exerted a strong influence on much of Persian court art, resulting in an oddly hybrid style and some unexpected juxtapositions. Here a prince in full regalia, including a turban with a cornucopia of feathers, receives a flower from a girl, probably a courtesan, in a very low-cut dress and bare feet. While the shading on the figures' faces lends them an individuality lacking in earlier more idealized portraits, they nevertheless adhere to a type developed by Shaykh Abbasi.
