Müdafiə günü—Pakistan əsgərlərinin sərhədlərini qorumaq üçün verdiyi qurbanların xatirəsini yad etmək üçün Pakistanda milli gün kimi qeyd olunur. 6 Sentyabr tarixi, 1965-ci ildə Hindistan qoşunlarının Pakistanın Pəncab bölgəsinə hücumu üçün beynəlxalq sərhədi keçərək Pakistanın Cammunu hədəf alan Böyük Slam Əməliyyatına başlaması günüdür. 1965-ci il müharibəsinin konteksti

1965-ci ildə Hind-Pakistan müharibəsi Pakistanın əhalini üsyana cəlb etmək və Hindistan ordusunun yerdəyişməsi məqsədi ilə Kəşmir Vadisinə 7000-8000 xüsusi hazırlanmış mücahid dəstəsini göndərməklə başladı. İkinci mərhələdə 1 Sentyabr, Cammu Bölməsindəki Axnur körpüsünə doğru Əməliyyat Böyük Slam adı verilən bir tank hücumu etdi. "Qısa və sürətli, fasitlə müşayiət olunan bir əməliyyat" olması nəzərdə tutulurdu. Alim Şüja Nəvazın dediyinə görə, Pakistan generalı Hindistanın Kəşmir Vadisi ilə əlaqəsini kəsmək üçün Axnur körpüsünü ələ keçirmək və Cammuya doğru üzmək niyyətində idi. Pakistanlılar Hindistanın Baş nazirinin Hindistanın Kəşmirə hücum ediləcəyi təqdirdə Pakistanı qisas alacağı ilə bağlı xəbərdarlığını qulaqardına vurmuşdular.

Sentyabrın 6-da "əvvəlcədən elan edilmiş strategiyaya" riposte görə, Hindistan Ordusu Lahor yaxınlığındakı Böyük magistral Yolunu kəsmək məqsədi ilə Pəncabdakı beynəlxalq sərhədi keçdi. Hücum Pakistan komandirləri üçün sürpriz oldu. Hava marşalı Nur Xanın sözlərinə görə, Ordu generalı Musa Xan müharibənin ikinci günündə prezidentə Ordunun silah-sursat tükəndiyini söylədi. Döyüşdə Ordunun ağır itki verdiyi bildirilir. 23 sentyabrda Pakistan BMT tərəfindən təsdiq edilmiş atəşkəs qəbul etdi.
