The flight of Sultan Mehmed has allowed the Angora parliament to vote in a new caliph, with the goal of guarding over Islam. The selection fell on Abdul Medjid, a cousin of former Sultan Mehmed VI. The present Caliph's father was Sultan Abdul Aziz, killed in 1876. The new Caliph is a man with a vast culture, at age 54. He enjoys great sympathy in Turkey and was elected caliph with virtualy the totality of ballots. He is a great friend of France. His daughter, Princess Durri Chehvâr Sultana (Sovereign Pearl) is merely 13 years of age, this being the reason why she can be seen without a veil. The Koran does not impose the veil at this age."

Fuga sultanului Mehmed a dat prilej parlamentului din Angora, ca să aleagă un nou calif, care să vegheze asupra Islamului. Alegerea a căzut pe Abdul Medjid, un văr al fostului sultan Mehmed al VI. Tata actualului Calif a fost sultanul Abdul Aziz, ucis în 1876. Califul cel nou este un om de cultură vastă, de 54 de ani. El se bucură de o mare simpatie în Turcia şi a fost ales calif aproape cu totalitatea voturilor. Este un mare prieten al Franţei. Fata lui, prinţesa Durri Chehvâr Sultana (Perla suverană) este abia la vârsta de 13 ani şi acesta e motivul pentru care se poate vedea nevoalată. Coranul permite, ca până la această vârstă să nu se poarte voalul."
